The Island

Santa Rosa is the second largest island in Channel Islands National Park. santa rosa mapBeach camping is open on this island from late September to late winter (visit the nps.gov site for more info). Island Packers runs landing trips to Bechers Bay, and we can arrange for kayaking at this island, Please keep in mind that the best kayaking on this island is not in the area of Bechers Bay. Bechers Bay offers great hikes and beautiful camping at the Vail and Vicker Ranch, but the kayaking is limited and very dependant on weather. Kayaking here would take you to Skunk Point, if the conditions were favorable.

The Options

Circumnavigation is very possible and affords a great trip for experienced kayakers. Please call the shop and talk with the guides, as they plan to do this trip every year. They will help you to arrange the dates and will suggest areas to camp. We do not offer a guided circumnavigation due to a very small demand for this service. But we do highly recommend this trip. Plan for this to occur during the month of October and possibly in November with a 6 day duration at minimum. Island Packers runs the landing trip to this island. You could check the schedule during the summer for dates available.

What we suggest if you want to kayak at Santa Rosa:

truthPaddle Sports in conjunction with Santa Barbara Outfitters offers a trip to this island on board a fully-equipped dive vessel. This is a three-day camping trip, and all the camping occurs on the dive-vessel in bunk-room style living quarters. Food is cooked to order and is delicious. This trip offers an amazing mix of kayaking, hiking, and diving at this and other remote locations that are typically very difficult to reach with a land-based approach. We provide you with the proper equipment (or what we call "toys") and bring you to the areas with the most favorable weather conditions. This trip is called the Channel Islands All Islands, and you can learn more here.
